If you could name one colour that describes me, what would it be?

Yellow, for my Fitchett pride, my sunny nature, my optimism?
Pink, for my girliness, and my occasional bimbotic nature?
Green, for the jealousy which shakes me from time to time?
Blue, for my random bouts of emoness, and also for the calm I seem to embody when the going gets tough?
Gold, grey, orange, purple, silver?

If I had to pick a colour for myself, it would be olive green, which seems to be a running trend in the colour palette of my clothing and accessories: I own two olive green t-shirts (from the same clothing brand, which means they printed the design on the same material!), an olive green sweater, a olive green bag I absolutely cannot live without… I don’t know what draws me to that colour, but it seems to really calm me somehow and it’s easy on the eyes as well, and it just looks so… right, no se porque! Today, however, I managed to prevent myself from buying yet another olive green t-shirt and settled for black instead. Summer’s nearly on our doorsteps, and it’s soon going to be t-shirt time, whee! Frankly, I can’t decide whether I prefer summer or winter fashion — whether I like hiding beneath streamlined winter coats that flatter all shapes and sizes, donning cute sweaters, and wearing boots that look oh-so-good with skinnies. Summer means ballet flats, which I don’t mind at all because my mum made me buy a pair of incredibly comfortable and cute patent leather flats to replace the Nine West ones I managed to make a hole in xP, and t-shirts… but I’m not a huge fan of skirts or shorts, and summer has killer weather… so blah!

I had a really great dinner tonight. (: My mum and I arrived in Singapore this afternoon, and after loads of errand-running that might send you to the little red ‘x’ at the top of the screen there if I describe it in detail, we had a steamboat dinner at a close family friend’s place. Steamboat is officially one of my favourite meals ever, and what we had tonight was fantastic! The chicken stock itself was already brilliant, and that provided the best base for everything that was put into the pot: from wontons, tofu, fishballs, seafood, veggies… It was one of the best meals I’ve had in a while. That was followed by a fruit compote with just about every unconventional and good fruit under the sun: avocado, dragonfruit, grapes, mango… what a combination! (: What made the night even better was getting to catch up with my cousin, who I used to see a few times a week when we were still schooling in Brunei, but once he left for college overseas and I followed suit, our meetings occur once or twice a year, at most. And oh man, did we have a lot to talk about, old LSE student to one just ending her first year at uni. I’m now back at the hotel… and am going to end the night with the brand new issue of In Style, May 2008. Heeheehee. It’s still the holidays, as far as I’m concerned.

Good night, y’all!

and we’ve come to the end of the line Thursday, Apr 24 2008

This is possibly my last post before I jet back to London on the most magnificent planes ever to grace our skies – the beautiful A380, also known as the World’s Largest Plane! The date on my calendar seems to have moved forty-odd days forward and jumped ahead a month in what feels like a short space of two weeks. My blue Delsey is lying next me, partially filled with the clothes and books and other assorted paraphernalia that I carted all the way to Heathrow from Bankside, only to leave half them lying to one side, collecting dust, in Brunei. I thought experience from boarding school in Melbourne would have turned me into a seasoned packer, but I keep making the same mistake time and time again. I just never seem to know what my limit is, and overcompensate because of that!

And because of that, I met up with Zainul for lunch just now so he could bring back a few, kind of heavy non-essential items on his next flight to London. For such a favour, I had to foot the $14.00 lunch bill, but it was well-worth it. One, I was chaffeured around in his newly-bought (second hand, but that’s negligible!) M3, known to be the mother of all BMWs at one point in time! I was scared he’d pull up in his bad-ass Nissan Z350 and scare the living daylights out of my mother, but he placated her with the BMW — which was a fantastic ride, by the way! Great sound system, effortless manual to automatic gear switching, or whatever the accurate terminology is. Class! Two, we had laksa and cucur and rojak at Lee Loi Fatt, a food destination that I’d completely forgotten about these past six weeks. Their cucur keladi is heavenly, the perfect combination of crispiness and soft yam-my goodness, and their laksa uses just the right amount of santan (coconut milk), so you don’t leave the bowl unfinished. And ooh, three, we decided to hit the BMW showroom after lunch to display his new ride. The sales assistants were practically oogling at it through the ceiling-high glass windows: O.O which I found absolutely hilarious because people, IT’S JUST A CAR! Then again, I’m not a car fanatic and my heart falls every single time I walk out to find my dad and brother hogging the television with a car-related show, so what do I know, eh? Hehe.

I was looking through old LiveJournal posts just now, and it struck me that my blogging style has changed ever since started this WordPress journal. I don’t have the power to write freely any longer, whereas I can be certain that only 50-odd people can read my musings and my rantings on my Eljay, so I tend to be a bit more expressive and a bit more relaxed and myself, I guess. I’m actualy contemplating moving back to Eljay, to a private journal where I can wax lyrical about just about anything and not be afraid of judgment, of stories of my life spreading like wildfire, but… we’ll see what happens in time to come!

Anyway, I am insanely excited about my summer! (Edited because Amanda said my original expression made my journal R-rated, hmpf). Let’s not talk about the upcoming exams, because the thought makes me very sad and depressed and just a little bit nervous (okay, a LOT nervous), so we’ll concentrate on its afterparty! (: Stage one of post-exams celebration involves an awesome holiday to Italy and Spain, Tash and Jiang Yue style! The experts have been consulted, and I did spend the better part of an hour looking through Charli’s pictures from her two-week-long Italian experience when she was over at Bankside, so we’re not going into this trip without a clue about what to see or do. Armed with Jiang Yue’s martial arts experience, and my unbelievably fantastic map-reading and Spanish conversational skills (LOL, AS IF), it’ll be a trip to remember. (: Kevin and I also have plans to go somewhere with a few people before Wimbledon begins, but those haven’t been fully thought out yet. And then there’re summery things like Thorpe Park and a play at the Globe Theatre, and oh my gosh, WE WILL ROCK YOU that I have been planning to catch for ages, and the inevitable pain of apartment hunting, that will occupy me until I finally leave in July.

In the short run however, I actually need some way of getting shampoo and conditioner on the Sunday so I can shower when I arrive back in Bankside! I hate that there’s no Boots close to Bankside, that the nearest one is in Waterloo station or at Covent Garden, next to LSE… Looks like my Sunday back will be a shopping and grocery day. Boo.

So, till England (or maybe my hotel in Singapore, who knows!), take care and I’ll see you all really soon!

A Beauty Meme

What five beauty products could you not live without?
  1. Moisturiser is a must! My skin tends to get dry, especially in London, so I apply it every morning as a primer and at night before bed.
  2. Blemish remover — which I use as a prevention rather than a cure, which um, can prove costly.
  3. Handcream. I have my favourite brands, but as long as I leave the house with a bit on and have some at my disposal at all times, I’m great!
  4. Lip balm: Vaseline and Blistex, to protect the mole on my lip from the harsh glare of the sunlight (or rather, UV rays).
  5. Makeup remover. No clogged pores!

What’s the worst beauty mistake you’ve made? Tweezing my own eyebrows in Form 4 in a bout of spontaneity, because I was bored and had itchy fingers. They were painfully thin, so thin in fact that I never want to look at old photos of myself again! — and the worst part was, I couldn’t hide them! They took a year to grow out… yet I still continue to tweeze them myself! Hmm, I never learn.

What’s your daily skincare regime consist of? Cleanse, tone, blemish remover if necessary, moisturise. I reckon it’s effective, even though simple.

What does your daily cosmetics regime consist of? Shiseido’s Dual Balancing Foundation and Benefit’s Boi-Ing concealer to minimise any blemishes on my skin (and only the blemishes, never the whole face!), a dusting of MAC’s sheer loose powder to set everything and … that’s about it! No eyeliner, mascara, blusher, eyeshadow… so it annoys me when people accuse me of wearing too much makeup. Have you seen photos of me, even from special occasions? ):

Favorite Beauty treat? Manicures and pedicures! I had a mani/pedi done yesterday, which was insanely relaxing. Sometimes it’s great to be pampered.

What’s your favourite beauty store? Benefit! It isn’t so much a store as a shop outlet for one specific brand, but I love the decor and packaging and could spend hours in there. (:

Favorite Budget brand? Rimmel (their eyeliner is fantastic for a budget brand)

Favorite Premium brands? Benefit, Bobbi Brown, Shu Uemura (their eyeshadow is the stuff of dreams) and MAC.

And what about Skin Care: Favorite Premium and Budget brands? I’ve only used one skin care brand ever, and that’s NuSkin. I suppose that could be considered pretty premium, but it worked for me the first time around and I don’t intend to change, ever.

And Hair Care? Premium would be KMS California’s Silk Sheen range. Nat used to be able to tell when I was in the shower in boarding school from the scent of my shampoo and conditioner alone (almond, mmm)! Budget would be Herbal Essences, and I’m not fussy about which range I use, as long as it smells great!

What Fragrances do you wear? Perfume is wasted on me because I’m either not bothered to spray on a scent before I leave the house, or forget to even if I intend to! I like fruity scents: DKNY Be Delicious (although everyone seems to own it and the smell is very distinctive) but I also have one which I break out from time to time… but I would like to smell distinctive, so I won’t tell you what it is. ;]

What’s your “every girl must own one” item? TWEEZERS.

And finally, best beauty tip? I’m big on moisture — so moisturise! Hands, body, face!

In addition to reorganising my makeup collection xP I started a new book yesterday: Middlesex, by Jeremy Eugenides (I nearly wrote ‘Euripedes’ there. Thanks, Medea!). It’s shaping up to be an epic, even though I’ve only read four chapters so far, but this is the first book in a while that’s really hooked me in! I’m usually a tad distrustful of book awards-prize winners — especially after the yawn-inducing Life of Pi that Uppie raved about for two whole years! — but this one already bears the characteristics of a great modern classic.

That made me think… If I were to write a book on my life, all I’d have to do is take snippets of MSN conversations I’ve had over x number of years (many of them are conveniently auto-saved on the various laptops and desktops I’ve used over the years) and publish them. A twist on the classic story-through-letters format, or Meg Cabot’s Guy Next Door’s story-through-emails, I guess. I’d be incredibly lost without MSN — the only way KCS and I still manage to talk daily, even though he left for Canada 5 years ago, how it doesn’t seem like I’ve lost touch with any of my closest Melbourne friends… and even how I sometimes communicate with people in Bankside when I’m too lazy to pick up the phone or visit their rooms!

We had dinner at Thiam Hock last night, and someone quipped, “This will be your last proper Chinese meal until you return in July”. I can’t believe the ‘lasts’ have already come this time around: yesterday was the end of my last weekend in Brunei this time around; tomorrow, Amanda and I are going to Fitness Zone for our last gym session; Wednesday and Thursday will be the last American Idol shows I will watch on TV before having to resort to YouTube… and Friday, I’m off! Perfect timing too, seeing as Andrew Lloyd Webber is mentoring this week on Idol and I love the theatre (: (everyone who put up with Ms. Duncan for four whole months on a daily basis during the production of Anything Goes deserves to say that!) and the next CSI episode I will watch involves some sort of board game involving Archie’s death o_O. I haven’t watched CSI in yonks, not since the whole Grissom-Sara loveplot got a tad out of hand, but I’d watch anything remotely Archie-related, so it really is a classic instance of great timing!

Law beckons. Mmmmmpf.

I found these snippets from MSN conversations I had with Zainul and Ashrin respectively while browsing through old archives on my friends-only LiveJournal. It’s amazing how many incidents and feelings that the passage of time renders almost forgotten — save for dull pangs in your heart which appear, temporarily, when you’re reminded about these old situations. I have five years’ worth of posts on my LJ, dating back to December 2002, with proper updates ending in December last year. One day, maybe sometime soon, I’ll read through them all — and laugh, and possibly cringe, cry, feel pangs of regret for… Self-discovery, if you like. There’s a lot of history on that LJ. (:

I went out for dinner and a drink with Gary (mentioned in MSN conversations above) on Wednesday- correction: I watched Gary have dinner while I wolfed down my first proper dessert in a few weeks, which was good but made me feel insanely guilty after because I’ve really been trying to eat healthily lately. We got to catch up on six months’ worth of backlogged news: his new job, what’s been happening at university for me, his trip to KK to climb Mount Kinabalu… and for those who know Gary, you’d know that his life is never short of interesting. xP He later insisted he buy me Shutter (the Thai version) to bring back to London to watch — “NOT ALONE” he expressly warned me, so I am now the (not so proud) owner of a pirated $2.50 copy of Shutter, which I really don’t want to watch because I really dislike horror flicks! We ended up at the renovated Dome, now called ‘Cheezbox’, for a drink at the end of the evening. The name of the restaurant really doesn’t do justice to the decor and the quality of food and drink there (incidentally, it falls under the same management as Gripps)! There are free internet terminals on the tables lining the glass windows, and we ended up reading the blog of a teenage girl, the link of which was saved on the computer. Warning: if you really want to ensure anonymity when using public computers, PLEASE ensure that your blog address isn’t saved where anyone can access it!

The holidays are drawing to a close… which I’m not too happy about. I’ve spent quite a bit calling and receiving calls from people in other countries — India, Singapore, Hong Kong, London even! — that it doesn’t feel like I’ve lost contact with most people at all. And then there’s MSN and Facebook too. However, in a week’s time, reality will kick in. 8.15 am morning calls will replace waking up automatically at 11.30 am, and I’ll soon have to contend with having to do my own laundry again, and finding some way of filling my tummy — all the things that you take for granted when you’re back home. The one thing which I’m looking forward to is lunch on the afternoon I arrive back. (:! And maybe a good long shower, but I’ve decided to beat the jetlag this time around by keeping awake as long as possible, till midnight if I can!

And oh, if you have yet to hear me obsess, listen up! King Lear is playing this season at the Globe Theatre, which I am insanely excited about! It’s a play which I chose to self-study for my Extended Essay in Year 12, and considering I was incredibly last-minute in its preparation, I only got to read it through once, and I haven’t as yet grown tired of it. The Merry Wives of Windsor (Shakespeare Company!) is playing too, as is A Midsummer Night’s Dream, but I definitely want to see Lear. And the Fool. (: A short trip to my LiveJournal yielded this…

JUNE 8TH, 2006

My Extended Essay, “I wear not motley in the brain”: an exploration of the irony of the position of the fool in Shakespeare’s plays Twelfth Night and King Lear, is completed. 3974 words, countless hours of redrafting and proofreading, and somehow, a feeling of absolute neutrality. I’m not entirely happy but I’m not entirely sad either. I know the sense of relief will come when I’ve finally submitted my essay to the Senior School Office but other than that I’m just not… happy.

It’s so odd.

I feel like cycling again. The Easter afternoons spent along the bike trails in Melbourne with Garrett, Sarah and Lyss were such good times and really idyllic — think the Sound of Music, except less cheesy! I’m growing excited about my Melbourne trip… and it isn’t for a good four months yet!

Right, I’m off to cram my little grey cells full of judicial review. Eeyuck. Till next time!

dentist Tuesday, Apr 15 2008

I swear my dentist hates me.

One thing I love about your teeth is that they’re straight – perfect – even without the use of braces!
Oh! … but mmm, you have a slight problem here with your wisdom tooth…
… which is growing laterally into your second molar.
We’re going to have to remove it… heh heh.”

… all this being said while he scales my teeth, laughing at my (failed) attempt to remain stock-still on the dentist’s chair. It is IMPOSSIBLE to not squirm when someone wields a (torture) instrument that can remove calculus and nasty bits from your teeth, and traces the outline of your teeth and gums with it. ): And he seems to take a lot of pleasure from my agony, laughing amiably (pfft) at my clenched fists and rigid body.

My one consolation is that the extraction of my wisdom tooth will only take place after I have completed my degree, which gives me at least three years to psyche myself up for the operation.

I hate trips to the dentist.
- not to be mistaken with a trip to the dentist (Veronica Mars, ep.120), if you get my drift. But that is equally as despicable.

Do you know what else I hate?
Public Law. I have begun to avoid Public Law revision by doing Law of Obligations re-revision, which is a pretty amazing thing for someone like me who has made it a point to espouse, all year long, her hatred for said module. ):

10 days till Singapore, 11 days till London. Goodness knows how long (or short) to exams.

UGHGHGHGHGHGGUGGGGGGHH.

note Sunday, Apr 13 2008

The password for my post below (because I like wordgames!) is:

first five letters of my boarding house in Melbourne + favourite colour + last syllable of  first name my Term 3, Year 11 room mate + favourite Aussie hairstyle minus the last letter
All small letters without spaces in between!

Happy cracking!

em es en Wednesday, Apr 9 2008

It’s 2.00 am, you desperately need a study break but know that should you take one, you’ll be in bed even later that night…

I have the best friends who can tell when I’m stressed out and crave hilarity. Cue ducks! (Click for a bigger picture!)

What makes the duck emoticon even cuter is that it’s animated, and a tiny pink heart appears above its head after it opens its beak to chirp. Now that I’ve saved it, Sharon and I can finally say “duck rice” in pictorial form and know that people will get our drift. (:

Hung Ming was also awake, trying to kill time before the Arsenal-Liverpool footy match that early morning…

Tash says:
what match? arsenal?
Hung Ming says:
yea… how on earth do u know?
Tash says:
hahaha i have unearthly powers! =D
Hung Ming says:
haha okk… so you just knew i’m an arsenal supporter?
impressive
do you have unearthly powers of predicting the outcome of footie matches?
Tash says:
um duh! i know who will win, of course
Hung Ming says:
who will it be?
Tash says:
… the better team which plays on the night
based on their playing, that is!
HAHAHAHA
Hung Ming says:
are u consulting your magic ball?
Tash says:
yup, my magic eight ball… which i shake about for an answer!
Hung Ming says:
u haven’t given me an answer… arsenal or liverpool?
Tash says:
DRAW
Hung Ming says:
what? no way. as long as it’s not 0-0 it will go to penalties. no one wants that.
LATER…
Hung Ming says:
GOLLLLLLLL, GoaaaaaaaaaLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL, WOOHOO!
yay, sorry, arsenal scored!
Tash says:
haha, i told you! a draw is coming up soon, mmm…
i’ll be in bed before the match finishes
so i’ll see the results when i wake up… eventually
Hung Ming says:
haha, as if it matters to u
Tash says:
it matters to me that i’m proved right… and you, wrong x)
EVEN LATER…
Hung Ming says:
waaaaaaaattttttt nooooooOOOOOOOOOOOO liverpool scored!!!

The end-result was 2-1 to Liverpool, proving my prediction of an initial draw right.

AND…
Tash says:
who could resist you anyway?
Hung Ming says:
wow, such flattery
what are u getting at, i wonder?
hmmm…
Tash says:
i wonder too. hmmm ;)
Hung Ming says:
are u always flirtatious after 2 am?
Tash says:
when i want something yes!
HUNG MING DRIVE ME AROUND TOMORROW
lol
Hung Ming says:
are u serious??
i don’t think the car’s ready tho,
my license is renewed btw but that’s not an issue…
Tash says:
OMG HUNG MINGGGGGG
i’m kidddingggggggg bahhhhhh
hahahaha dude!
Hung Ming says:
hahahaha what
it’s hard to tell when u’re kidding
Tash says:
when i type in caps and end my sentence with a ‘lol’ i am KIDDING aiyo!
Hung Ming says:
u must have been kidding about that jitsu friend of yours then
Tash says:
she’s like some regional open champion!
HAHAHAHA
Hung Ming says:
wow… respect
so, does that count as ‘kidding’?
Tash says:
okay… THAT doesn’t
Hung Ming says:
if you end it with ‘haha’ in caps
Tash says:
… that was meant to be an evil laugh.

(Disclaimer: I have known Hung Ming since we were kids, and in no way, shape or form will I ever dream of flirting with him, OMG OKAY! Heehee thanks!)

And Shaz! Our interchanges at odd moments are quite random, because we’re usually in the middle of work, but they bring amusement, cuteness and great laughs which are much-needed, especially in the midst of reading about intellectual property rights!

I love my friends. They make study sessions bearable, and no matter what time of the day (or night) it is, one or two of my nearest and dearest will always be around - on the phone, around Bankside or on MSN - to keep me company while I burn the midnight oil, to hear my woes, or to just have a truckload of laughs with. Thanks, guys, for everything. (: For the late-night Phish Food sessions, for answering my phone calls in the wee hours of the morning, for dropping all things and speeding to wherever I am because I need to see you, for your words that sustain me, for standing by me while my world crashed and burned and rebuilt itself. Thank you. And I mean it. (:

of foodscapades and music! Thursday, Apr 3 2008

Can anyone offer a theory as to why a “normal” portion of food in Brunei no longer satiates me? I don’t recall London-ian portions of food being particularly ample (Misato doesn’t count!) so why do I feel so … cheated eating out here? Weird.

In any case, Syaz celebrated her birthday for the third time today at Gripps. I don’t have to worry about eating when I’m with her, because she seems to share the same level of passion for food that I do. I’ve introduced her to what is beyond my favourite Mexican place in London which serves the best chilli poppers ever, and for her first birthday celebration a month back, she chose Tinseltown, with what is slated to be London’s best milkshakes. So, safe to say that if there’s one thing we have in common, it’s our love for full tummies. (:

I was the first to arrive today, with janji Melayu holding true on yet another occasion! When everyone did arrive though, it was a pretty good, low-key celebration. Even though our dear Syaz is 21, she is occasionally a tad blur: Jances and I were discussing cake plans right under her nose, under the pretext of swapping phone numbers we already have, and she didn’t pick up on a thing! And when Jances “had to leave” all of a sudden to “pick up her brother”, with Amal creeping out behind, everyone but Syazzles knew what was up. That made the cake surprise fantastic though! What with Ali showing off his magic tricks, the cake and getting to catch up with a fair few people, I had a blast this afternoon. Ooh, and managed to persuade Ali to send me across the road to my mum’s office in his Fortuner because I didn’t intend to dash across four roads of traffic in mid-afternoon. :D

I’ve been spending far too much time on Skype and MSN lately, so much so that I might as well graduate with a degree in multitasking/keeping conversations with ten people at the same time. Suan and I had such a good talk tonight. There are only a handful of people who know me as well as she does, but with no one else do I share the same level of craziness. We are Brunei’s ultimate Savage Garden fans, knowing both albums front to back (and poor Hung Ming had to sit through 4 minutes of me crooning away to ‘Truly Madly Deeply’ when we karaoked the other day!) – and tonight, we were dueting madly to their songs. I actually pengsan at the thought of other people actually being witnesses to the random shit we get up to online, but I love every second of them!

Tash says:
it’s (The Lover After Me i.e. my favourite Savage Garden song) playingggggggg!
here i go again i promised myself…
i swear the entire album was written about colby! (Darren Hayes’ ex-wife)

kimuchi says:
OMG!
yeay!
you moved on i still feel exactly the sameee

Tash says:
i’m trying to locate my albums
but even my best of savage garden case doesn’t contain the disc
ooh ooh! DARREN’S BEST PART
i shouldn’t be holding on
but i’m still holding on for youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu-aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh

kimuchi says:
OMG!
lol
i just sang out that bit emotionally at the same time
lol

Tash says:
did you?!
OMG we’re so attuned!

kimuchi says:
i knows!
squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I have the massivest cradle-snatcher crush on David Archuleta from American Idol! Yes, I know he’s 17 years old, but he possesses the sexiest, most beautiful voice I have heard in a while. Mmm. Tonight was Dolly Parton night on American Idol, and being my dad’s favourite singer, we were obliged to hear his comments about each of the performers’ renditions of her songs… and then we all later took part in an impromptu karaoke performance of Yellow Roses at the dining table!

Oh, and while rummaging through my piles of CDs to locate my Savage Garden albums, I chanced upon the video that Nat and Laura made for the 2006 International Student Assembly, watched it, and was close to literally laughing my ass off at certain scenes in the video. I’m going to attempt to minimise the video size and somehow upload it, because it’s one gem of a video!

A plane just flew over my house, and it’s 1.30 am — living right next to the airport has its downsides like that at times. Off to bed amidst the sound of roaring planes. Good night!
